The son of Portuguese immigrants, Fernandes Castro was born to the late Domingos Castro and the late Maria (Costa) Castro in Fall River, Massachusetts. Fernandes lived in Fall River for most of his life, but spent a short time in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. He was married to Lucy (Pestana) Castro.

He worked for Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, before spending 20 years with Pilgrim Latex. He then joined the staff at Pondsville State Hospital as a painter in the maintenance department. He remained in the department for 30 years before retiring in 1985.

During his retirement, Fernandes enjoyed gardening at his son?s house, fishing, and walking. He also was a member of Santo Christo Church.

Fernandes, 80, of Fall River, died at his home on Sunday, September 3, 2000.

In addition to his wife, Fernandes is survived by 2 sons, Paul E. Castro of Swansea, Massachusetts, and Ricardo Castro of Fall River. He also leaves a sister, Elsie Vera of Connecticut; two grandchildren, Michelle and David Castro; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Sophia Arruda, the late Edward Castro, and the late Ernest Castro.
