Michael J. Proto, 73, of Tiverton passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Vivian L. (Araujo) Proto. Born in Bristol, he was a son of the late Michael and Jennie Proto.

Mr. Proto was a supervisor for the Rhode Island Veterans Home. A Bronze Star recipient, he proudly served 23 years in The United States Army in Korea, Desert Shield and Desert Storm, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was a member of the Tiverton Rod and Gun Club.

He was the loving father of Paula P. Alves and her husband Herman of Bristol and Harold L. Gaines and his wife Debra, Ronald R. Gaines and Donald J. Gaines, all of Anderson, South Carolina. Cherished grandfather of seven and great grandfather of ten. He was the brother of the late Peter "Sonny" Proto.

Relatives and friends are invited to Visitation on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 from 5-7 pm in POCASSET MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 462 Main Road, Tiverton. Burial will be private. www.almeida-pocasset.com
