Raymond A. Gagnon, 91, of Fall River, MA passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 11th at the Brookdale Sakonnet Bay in Tiverton, RI. Born in the Flint section of Fall River, he was son of the late Armand and Blanche Gagnon. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 62 years, M. Madeline (Amaral) Gagnon, and a loving father to children Dr. Suzanne Gagnon (and her husband Stephen Zimniski), Brenda Gagnon Clermont (and her husband Edmond Clermont), Gerald Gagnon, and grandchildren Nicholas Zimniski and Kayleigh Clermont. He is also survived by his sister Lorraine (Gagnon) Dupont and several nieces and nephews.
Raymond attended Fall River schools and joined the U.S. Navy in 1943, where he was stationed in Cuba during WWII. He returned to the US following the war and worked for many years as a foreman for the Massachusetts Department of Public Works, a position from which he retired in 1986 at age 60.
Ray was most well known as a long-time bartender at White's Restaurant in Westport, MA where he worked for nearly 50 years. Amicable and people-oriented, he and his wife spent many weekend evenings dancing with friends at Lincoln Park. He was well travelled, having been to Europe and Hawaii in addition to having taken several Caribbean cruises. He and Madeline spent the last several winters at their vacation home near Ft. Lauderdale, FL. In Fall River Ray produced tomatoes and other vegetables for the whole neighborhood in the prolific vegetable garden he maintained for many years, and hosted many family clamboils and Thanksgiving dinners at their home. One of his favorite pastimes was playing cards with his children and the grandchildren he adored. He especially liked spending summer weekends on Cape Cod, always ready with a joke and a smile. In 2015 he and Madeline moved to Tiverton, RI, where he spent his final years.
Funeral will be held on Saturday, October 14th from Almeida Funeral Home, 1309 Globe Street with a viewing beginning at 8:30 am. A memorial mass will be held at Holy Trinity Church on Stafford Road at 10:00 am with internment to follow at Notre Dame Cemetery Mausoleum.
The family would like to thank Drs. Warren Wood and Marc Theroux, Beacon Hospice of Rhode Island and the Geriatric Unit at St. Anne's Hospital for the care they provided in his final days, in addition to niece Diane Martini and privately employed caregivers Paul Alves and Frances Van Ness. Cards and remembrances may be sent to The Gagnon Family c/o Brenda Clermont, 1 Sunset Circle, Mashpee, MA 12649. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Beacon Hospice of Rhode Island, or simply take an elderly person out to lunch in Ray's memory.
