Obituary

Robert Joseph Mignone, M.D., F.A.P.A., 84, of Tiverton, RI, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2024.

Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Susan Mignone, his son Marcus Mignone and his wife, Amy; son Paul Mignone and his wife, Maria; step-daughter Polly Peters and her husband, Jonathan; and step-son Zachary Currier and his wife, Kristina. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Giuliana, James, Alexa, Joseph, Maia, Finn, Jasper, Sadie and Quinn. Robert was predeceased by his sister, Mary Williamson.

Born in New Haven, CT, on March 14, 1940, Robert was the son of the late Joseph Mignone, M.D., of New Haven, CT and Louise Stansfield of Fall River, MA. He attended the Hopkins Grammar School (New Haven, CT).

Robert was an athlete, singer and honors student. In 1962, he graduated cum laude from Amherst College (Amherst, MA). He would often recall happy memories and life-long friends he made during these years. He was president of Beta Theta Pi and he participated in rugby and track. Robert had a beautiful voice and was a member of the singing group the "DQs", a double-quartet.

Robert continued his education at Duke University Medical School (Durham, NC). In 1966, he earned M.D. and B.M.Sc. degrees and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha national medical honor society.

Robert dedicated his life to caring for patients. He did his internship at Yale-New Haven Hospital (New Haven, CT), his neurology training at Cornell-New York Hospital, and served as clinical associate in EEG and clinical neurology at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, MD). He subsequently completed his training in psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston, MA) where he served as Chief Resident.

Robert was board certified by the Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He carried the distinction of fellow, American Psychiatric Association (F.A.P.A.). In 1973, Robert was an assistant, psychiatry (Massachusetts General Hospital); clinical instructor, department of psychiatry (Harvard Medical School); and had a practice of psychiatry, ambulatory care center (Massachusetts General Hospital). From 1974-1989, he was founder of Boston North Shore Associates; attending psychiatrist at Salem Hospital (Salem, MA); and chief, department of psychiatry at J.R. Shaughnessey Rehabilitation Hospital (Salem, MA).

On August 14, 1990, Robert married the love of his life Susan (Currier) in Salem, MA. They were happily married for 34 years.

Recently married, Robert and his wife, Susan, moved to Sarasota, FL where he was founder and director of Gulf Coast Health Services (Sarasota, Venice and Punta Gorda, FL). Spirituality in medicine and the power of faith in healing was a particular passion. He became an ordained minister in the Universalist Church. He also studied acupuncture in UCLA's extension program and healing methods in Eastern medicine. He was a founding member of the American Academy of Acupuncture Medicine.

In spite of a busy clinical practice, Robert found time to write three books. His first, published in 2007, "Ordinary Valor: How Cancer Saved My Life—Not Once, but Twice," described his battle to survive both prostate and kidney cancer. Later he published books on common psychiatric conditions and on medical-legal consulting areas involving mental health.

In 2011, Robert and Susan moved to Tiverton, RI, where they renovated a historic stone cottage. He took joy in his work and when faced with retirement, instead chose to open Stone Bridge Psychiatric Associates (Tiverton, RI) and become a staff psychiatrist at the Kent Center (Warwick, RI).

Robert lived in the present and expressed his gratitude with family and friends. He loved spending time with Susan and their extended family over noisy gatherings. He enjoyed rooting for the New England Patriots and Boston Bruins with Tilly, his golden retriever, by his feet. He was filled with reverence watching the sun set over the Sakonnet River or sitting on the screen porch, listening to "the Tiverton Symphony," frenetic crickets and birds singing their evening performance. His warm smile and twinkling blue eyes will be missed by all.

In Robert's own words, "My life has been full, for better and worse. Always it has been meaningful and instructive. Forever impermanent, usually unpredictable, and often funny. I value each and every day of this visit on earth. There are no throw-aways."

Robert's family is very thankful for the wonderful care he received from Brookdale Sakonnet Bay. There will be a private family celebration of Robert's life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tiverton Fire Dept. and EMS, 85 Main Rd, Tiverton, RI 02878.
